Moisture, minerals in the water (iron, calcium, magnesium) body oils and soap scum. Combine them into one type of soil and what to you have? A deposit called plumbers stone. Especially difficult to remove.

 

In the past abrasive cleaners were used to deal with this soil. Not the best solution when you look at tubs that have had surface worn away and no longer shine. Abrasive cleaners are especially harmful to the gelcoat found on fiberglass tubs and fixtures.
